Brahmacharya, the fourth Yama. Brahmacharya literally translates to "to master the creative energy." This Yama, or ethical guideline of the yogis, is the act of controlling our prana (or life force, or vital energy) for the use of our highest evolution. We are creators, co-creating with creation itself. The first limb of the eight-fold path is the Yamas, or attitudes and behaviors towards others. The Yamas are basically the moral “don’ts.” The 5 Yamas are Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Aparigraha, and Brahmacharya. The fifth of the Yamas is Brahmacharya. Brahmacharya is non-excess, self-control, or moderation.

The Eight Limbs of Yoga: Yamas, the first limb. Brahmacharya, the fourth Yama. Brahmacharya literally translates to "to master the creative energy." This Yama, or ethical guideline of the yogis, is the act of controlling our prana (or life force, or vital energy) for the use of our highest evolution. Brahmacharya is the fourth yama — the fourth of five ways in which yogis (ideally) relate to the outer world. (The others are kindness, truthfulness, not taking what doesn’t belong to you, and not being greedy.) The basic idea of brahmacharya that we need to pay attention to the endless craving for more that never satisfies us.

In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali described the yogic path as an “Eight Limb Path” that provides ethical guidance for a purposeful life. The practice of Brahmacharya is one step on this path. Patanjali conceptualized the yogic path as having limbs, like the branches of a tree.
